Bread

We have put the breads that we feel travel well on this page. It isn't our full range but we want you to enjoy our products at their best. All the breads on this page have good keeping qualities, either by reason of their size, or of their manufacture. If you would like to buy others please contact us for a product list and either come and pick up or go to one of our stockists and order it from them.

COUNTRY BREAD

These loaves are made in huge rustic wheels of 1.2 kilos, and made on a natural (sourdough) rye leaven. Chewy, open textured and crusty, it is a bread to toast, griddle, perhaps rub with garlic, eat with cheese, or even just strawberry jam. (Please don’t use margarine-butter, butter, butter!) The size and the fact that it is a sourdough can give this bread a shelf life of up to four days. We make it this large so that it has good keeping qualities; if you wish you may cut it in half - they freeze wonderfully.

RYE, CARROT, HAZELNUT AND RAISIN BREAD

Wheat free, it is based on a bread I ate in Germany (home of an incredible variety of ryes), and contains carrots, which enhance the moistness and keeping qualities, raisins, which act as a sweet foil to the sourdough rye taste, and hazelnuts which provide a nutty crunch and flavour. It can last, properly looked after for 5 days.

SUNFLOWER RYE

This is one of our signature loaves. Not 100% rye, it has some wheat flour, which makes it a little lighter. The texture which is waxy, gelatinous, and medium dense, comes from the addition of cooked barley, while the taste is fennel and caraway, with molasses to accentuate the sweetness. We cover it in sunflower seeds which crackle and crunch in the mouth.

RYE MULTIGRAIN

This is a wheatfree rye bread bursting with a mixture of cracked rye grains and linseed. It lasts incredibly well, tastes very very good and makes a change from the seedless wheatfree rye. Click on the thumbnail for the larger image where you can perfectly see the waxy dense texture characteristic of these types of bread. Even if you love wheat you will enjoy this bread. If you are a fan of continental ryes then this is for you. Herrings are delicious with it, especially with a beetroot pickle and perhaps some horseradish cream.
